I own a vw gti 2-door dsg. Each time I have been in manual mode. It occurs when I am coasting to either slow down or stop. Then attempt to accelerate. Though the car mfd tells me it is in gear I. The accelerator does nothing but rev the engine. The car remains coasting. I have to take the shifter out of manual mode, and place it into d. Car now has miles on the odometer and it has had this problem almost since day one. Fault has occurred over 10 times and is becoming more frequent and for longer durations.

On another occasions while driving at approx 65mph with the transmission in drive, the vehicle revved in neutral and would not accelerate.Shifting from 2 to 3rd seems to hold too long surging in many instances. Also it seems to engine brake rather than gliding at times when I take my foot off the gas. This is not desirable. I plan to change the ATF and filter soon. VW says it is a life time fill. YA right.
Is this something that can be modified with software using a VAG Com diagnostic system or similar? Is this indicative of some other issue? A proper maintenance servicing — pan drop and filter change — is the thing to try first. To do the test, set the park brake.

From reading several VW boards people recommend changing it every 50k. So based on that I am not in too bad a shape. Your sarcasm about VW is off base. All vehicle manufactured have a warranty period. You have a 17 year old vehicle and time is a factor just as miles are. VW automatics are not the most rugged and the age adds to the wear. I would recommend several pan drops and filter changes to bring the unit up to snuff. Do the second one a thousand miles after the first one if the car runs OK after the first one. If not, you have a more serious problem, and a visit to a good transmission shop is in order.

I recently began seeking out a transmission fluid change, but I am reading conflicting reports on whether it will be best to leave it as it is or get it flushed. I have called a handful of places, and each has cautioned me about changing the fluid, and they recommended leaving the fluid in my car The emerging theme is the fluid replacement will disburse potential loose bodies within the transmission, therefore causing damage.
On the other hand, one business told me I needed to seek out a place that will flush the fluid, as this will solve the problem listed above.
